Post-Doctoral Research Fellowship in Otolaryngology
University Kansas

The University of Kansas Otolaryngology Department is pleased to announce the continuation of our successful post-doctoral research fellowship. The fellowship is under the direction of Drs. Chiu (Otolaryngology Department Chair), Sykes (Director of Clinical Research - Otolaryngology), and Villwock (Otolaryngology & Rhinology faculty).

This fellowship is primarily clinical in nature; basic science opportunities exist for those with a special interest or prior experience. Currently, our Department maintains an active clinical trials program with at least three additional clinical trials in the planning stages that we anticipate will be actively recruiting soon. There are also a myriad of other projects, representing all subspecialties of otolaryngology.

A unique aspect of our fellowship is the emphasis on mentorship. Our research paradigm focuses on a team-based approach with weekly meetings to review, supplement, and refine research ideas. At minimum, the candidate will gain valuable skills in project design and implementation, data and statistical analysis, and manuscript writing. We also encourage our fellows to gain clinical exposure in the operating room and clinics. As most candidates are interested in pursuing residency training in otolaryngology, we are very cognizant of the need for the research year to be productive. This includes tangible results such as publications – our current fellow is an author on 10 manuscripts that have either been submitted or are in press – as well as career advice. In short, we are committed to helping our fellow gain their desired skillsets and professional trajectory.

We are looking for self-motivated candidates with a passion for learning and integrating as a meaningful member of our research team. Prior research experience is preferred, but not required. The fellowship will take place each academic year from July – June. Interested candidates should apply to: ksykes@kumc.edu by March of each academic year.

Diversity Endowment URM Away Rotation Grant
American Academy of Otolaryngology

The American Academy of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery Diversity and Inclusion Committee would like to introduce medical students from under-represented minorities (URM) to the field of otolaryngology. Two grant winners will be selected. The winners will select a program from the list of participating programs to apply for an away rotation. The grant winners will receive $1000 to use towards travel, housing or food during their away rotation. Receipts must be submitted to receive reimbursement, and recipients are required to attend the away rotation.

URM Senior Clerkship 

Kansas University Medical Center, Department of Otolaryngology, Head & Neck Surgery

The department of Otolaryngology would like to invite senior medical students who are under-represented in medicine as defined by the AAMC to apply for a visiting clerkship at our institution. 1 student will be accepted for this clerkship will be provided with a mentor and financial assistance. The students will receive a 2000$ stipend and fee reimbursement for application expenses. Receipts must be submitted to receive reimbursement, and recipients are required to attend the away rotation. Clerkships are only available to medical students attending LCME approved U.S. and Canadian medical schools.


VSAS requirements must be complete. Please visit the Visiting Medical Students page on the KUMC.EDU site. Students also need to email Dr. Carrie Francis (cfrancis@kumc.edu) to inform our department of your intent to apply and be considered for this clerkship  .  VSAS requirements and departmental contact should be complete by May 15, 2017.

The Harry Barnes Endowment Travel Grant
American Academy of Otolaryngology

The American Academy of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery, in collaboration with the Diversity and Inclusion Committee, will provide Travel Grants to assist with needed funding for meritorious, young residents of African descent from the United States, Caribbean or Canada to participate in career molding educational experiences while attending the AAO-HNSF 2017 Annual Meeting & OTO Experience.

Subsidized Visiting Elective Program

The Office of Minority Physician Recruitment at Boston Medical Center affiliate teaching hospital of Boston University School of Medicine is now accepting applications for their Subsidized Visiting Elective Program (SVEP). The Subsidized Visiting Elective Program allows qualified 4th year medical students that are considering applying to one of Boston University Medical Center’s residency programs the opportunity to get hands-on experience and exposure to our clinical services and diverse patient population during a month long elective.

What are the benefits?

Non-UUHS students who identify as under-represented and are scheduled for an Away Rotation at UUHS are eligible to apply for an Away Rotation travel stipend.  Please submit your request and budget at least 2 weeks before travel is anticipated along with your invitation for the rotation. Awards are $2,000 and are intended to cover travel, housing, and food costs.

Minority Student Clerkship

The Department of Otolaryngology invites medical students who are members of underrepresented minority groups as defined by the AAMC and are interested in pursuing a career in otolaryngology-head & neck surgery to apply for mentoring clerkships at our institution.

Two types of clerkships are available:

  • One-month clinical clerkship: a one-month clinical rotation in otolaryngology-head & neck surgery; students must be eligible to participate in clinical rotations at the home medical school. 
  • Three-month research clerkship: Available June through August, a three-month research rotation in otolaryngology-head and neck surgery with optional clinical experience.  Open to any medical student following completion of at least one year of medical school education (students may apply for clerkships, with earliest start of clerkship summer M1-M2).  Applications and transcripts must be submitted no later than the preceding March 31st.

Diversity Scholarships

At Mayo Clinic, the promotion of cultural diversity and equal opportunity is a guiding principle and goal. The Diversity Scholarship Program encourages the participation of underrepresented minorities (African-Americans, Hispanics, American Indians and Alaska Natives) in Mayo's Visiting Medical Student Clerkship Program.

The scholarship awards $2,500 (minus taxes) in financial support. During your clerkship, you'll have the opportunity to meet with the program director and residents. You will also meet with the director of diversity affairs at Mayo Clinic.

American Society of Pediatric Otolaryngology (ASPO)
Rotation Program for Minority Medical Students

The purpose of the ASPO URM Pediatric ENT Rotation program is to introduce medical students from under-represented minorities to pediatric otolaryngology. The program has been endorsed by the AAO-HNS Diversity Committee.

To be eligible, the medical student must a member of an underrepresented minority group. The term “Under-represented minority” is defined by the AMA and AAMC as “those racial and ethnic populations that are underrepresented in the medical profession relative to their numbers in the general population”. This includes traditionally defined underrepresented minority groups, African-Americans, Mexican-Americans, Native Americans (American Indians, Alaska Natives, and Native Hawaiians), and mainland Puerto Ricans, in addition to other minority groups.

Johns Hopkins Department of Otolaryngology
Clerkship for Underrepresented
Minority Medical Students

The Department of Otolaryngology invite medical students who are members of underrepresented minority groups as defined by the AAMC and are interested in pursuing a career in otolaryngology-head & neck surgery to apply for mentoring clerkships at our institution.

Once accepted, mentorship is provided by Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery faculty members during the clerkship, as well as financial assistance (i.e., registration fee waiver, $500/month stipend towards housing). Clerkships are available throughout the year. Applications and transcripts must be submitted 3-6 months in advance of the desired elective. Clerkships are only available to medical student attending LCME approved U.S. and Canadian medical schools, and meet the AAMC definition of underrepresented minority groups.
